Secrets of a Woman shares the secrets passed
down from generations of women in the Ga tribe
of Ghana, West Africa.
In Accra, Ghana, as a woman's body changes the different stages are celebrated. From a young girl entering puberty, to a young woman entering motherhood; it is from the previous generation that women learn about their bodies and how to take care of them.

This passing down of rituals and techniques is lost in our western life. It is no longer our grandmothers that teach us about our bodies and how they function, but it is the profit making cosmetic and pharmaceutical companies. When it comes to vaginal cleansing, we are told daily by TV and magazines that we need soaps, sprays, pads, and perfumes.

The truth is our vagina has its own natural cleaning system that flushes out bacteria, which does not need any added chemicals. Women's discharge is normal. It is part of the body's natural cleansing system. However due to sugar-laden diets in Western culture, the amount of discharge is greater in western women, and can have a thick and white consistency - known in the village as 'odepu'.

Odepu can stick to the walls of the vagina and the entry of the womb. In the west, there is a lack of understanding that this excessive discharge may be harmful, and women solve the symptom by wearing a panty liner.

In the West African tribe, they are more aware of its un-cleanliness, and the odour attached. Various remedies would be given to women to get rid of odepu, and draw the discharge away. However, the daily cleansing technique (taught here) requires no chemicals, and was one way that mothers taught their daughters to prevent getting odepu.

Improved Intimacy

Back in West Africa, a woman's tightness - ensuring her husband's sexual pleasure - is what helps keep a husband loyal. In the western world, great sex improves any relationship. The firmness, and friction that makes sex pleasurable is gone with a watery vagina (there is no 'po po shi po shi' the village term for tightness). The result is soppy sex.

The vaginal cleansing technique helps to ensure a clean and firm vagina offering more pleasure and improves the quality of an orgasm. In West Africa, this is another secret passed from mothers to daughters as they formed a family of their own. A clean firm vagina is an important aspect to keeping their partners loyal.
